A minimum of 11 of the weather balloons, transporting 18,000 packages of black-market cigarettes, have since been recovered

Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.

Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."

Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.

Cross-Border Effects

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.

Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
